I haven’t been on my blog this month much as life has just been in the way, especially re-doing some areas of my nest before winter comes. As with most home improvement projects, things tend to stack up and spread to other rooms to now eventually have to do something to them too… kind of like knocking down a row of dominoes, but not as much fun. Part of the sorting out of what can go and what do I keep are my books, my treasures. Writers without books? Really!
However, my favorite author, Pat Conroy has been a welcome distraction and yes he will live forever on my book shelf. If you have never heard of him, he definitely is worth your time. You will also enter and make new discoveries of the low-country and it’s endless salt-marshes and way of life. I had never seen a salt-marsh until I discovered Hunting Island, South Carolina and Pat Conroy about the same time. His first book I read ‘Beach Music’ took me into a world of what it was like growing up there with a beach close at hand, turtle nests, and a southern way of life with a rich history but not glamorized, and families with real problems that are universal.
His next book, ‘The Water is Wide’ a novel, is based on his real life experience of being an idealistic new teacher and the local politics that played out as he tried to introduce and provide a stimulating education to a group of students racially, geographically, and socially isolated from the broader world just across the waters of their small island that they were totally unaware that even existed.
If you have not read Pat, you might want to give him a try. A truly nitty-gritty, but eloquent writer who inspires me to keep at it with computer, pad, and pen. Who has inspired you as a writer?
Thank you for visiting today and to those in the Northern Hemisphere… Happy Fall! ~ terre
