Happy Nurses Week… in the Year of the Nurse 2020! Maybe you are on the frontlines taking care of Covid-19 patients, or maybe you are taking care of the other patients who are urgently hospitalized such as having a baby, a sick child, or someone with a traumatic injury. Nurses are found everywhere taking care of those in need from pre-birth to the elderly and everyone in-between. Maybe you are a nurse supporting the nurses at the frontlines and patients, such as case managers, clinical nurse specialists or other advanced practice nurses. Maybe you are a nurse leader helping to insure that the nurses have a supportive and safe environment in need to care for others, including themselves and their team. Maybe you are a morale booster, a nurse leader, educator, mental health nurse, nurse researcher, or a patient advocate. Nurses wear many hats and often at the same time. Whatever type of nurse you are, all nurses are needed… You are important! Thank you for all you do! Happy Nurses Week!

Have you ever dreamed of accomplishing something that didn’t quite turn out how you wanted? Or your goal turned out to be more than you could have hoped for? The quote above while referring to “the man” of course equally applies to women as we strive to reach new heights and try new things, whether personal goals or in our work life.

Here are some helpful tips I have learned along this road as I have strived to reach both personal goals, especially as an independent inventor, or when working in teams professionally.

  1. Define clearly what it is you (team) want to accomplish
  2. What steps do you need to get there?
  3. Who do you need on your team in order to reach the goal?
  4. Clear communication with transparency
  5. Define the timeline, budget, and time commitment needed
  6. Be flexible, incase you left out a crucial step or team member
  7. Build relationships while being well-rounded
  8. Give credit where credit is due. Show gratitude.
  9. Own the results, even if they are not the ones you wanted
