When you are told something, do you feel you need to help make it right somehow? Are you a constant fixer? Does the person want you to just listen or to fix? In the workplace, is it something that someone else wants you to do that maybe isn’t really yours to own? Is it the same people in your life that you are frequently called to help? Granted there are those who truly need our help, but you also really know who those are, such as children, the sick, and the elderly. But what about those you know can or should be able to figure something out for themselves? Would you feel guilty if you said no?
If you are a fixer and helper, often the first inclination is to jump right in and do something about it, to fix it or to help them fix it. While that is often admirable in someone, when is it too much? It is not uncommon to start to feel resentful or you just don’t have time, which is often true. You might start feeling burnt out. Do you stop and take care of things brought to you so often that you find yourself getting behind in your own responsibilities or cramming in long hours of a day or week to get everything done? While it is a good thing to be able to help, ask yourself first, is this mine to own? Why do I feel this is mine? Will it get done otherwise if I don’t do it? Do I have to be the person to do it? Again, is it really mine to own?
